A good microphone mount or stand is about more than looks. A stand will affect the overall sound you produce. The right stand makes proper placement easy, and good sound and placement go hand in hand.
The first thing you should consider when shopping for a mic stand is your purpose. Do you plan to do a lot of moving around or do you simply need a mount that stands still? Will you be sitting or standing? Will it be someplace where there’s danger of knocking it over?
All of these considerations matter. For example, if you want to be able to take the microphone off the stand easily to walk, talk, and sing, you need to be able to do this quickly and easily. If you’re on stage, you won’t be able to stop the show for a couple of minutes while you struggle with the mic stand. And if it’s going to be in a spot where there’s a lot of commotion, you must have an extremely sturdy base that’s well weighted and designed to stay upright even when bumped into.
One of the things that people often neglect to consider when looking to purchase a microphone stand is vibration. When a stand is on stage with a lot of other noise, from drums and bass for example, it will vibrate and the microphone picks up these sounds. Needless to say, this can seriously damage the sound quality. That’s why it’s vital that you check the kind of shock absorption the stand offers. A good shock absorption system will isolate those interfering noises and keep the sound clear. This is usually done through some sort of foam padding or elastic suspension.
Choosing the right mic stand is essential to putting on a good show. When shopping for a new one, be sure to ask as many questions as possible and consider everything we just covered.
