Microphone Preamplifier

WHY Microphone Preamplifier?

The current that is generated from a microphone is very small and results in a very low signal. In order for this signal to be usable, the mic level needs to be amplified to line level.  The line level for consumer products is usually about −10 dBV while for professional audio equipment, the line lever is tyically +4 dBu. A Preamp is the means by which the mic level is boosted to line level and the quality of this piece of equipment can make all the difference in the way a recording will sound. Preamps are usually built into interfaces and consoles as well as being available as outboard units. They range from very affordable to extremely expensive, but a really nice preamp can be well-worth the investment.
