The Shure KSM32/SL Condenser Mic: Finally, A Mic That Can Do it All
This is a good mic choice for those looking to buy a jack-of-all-trades mic because it can do it all.
When it comes to the Shure KSM32/SL Condenser Mic, special
attention must be paid to its stylized aesthetic. Personally, whenever I pick up a midrange
microphone, I’m dismayed by the amount of cheap plastic accessories that ship with
it, and the shoddy protective screening that invariably ends up bent and broken
over time.
From its seemingly indestructible protective screening, to
its beautifully curved lines, the Shure KSM32/SL Condenser Mic is every bit as
classy as those that cost five times its price.
It also comes in a premium aluminum-sided carrying case. This case is darn near indestructible,
too. However, since it’s aluminum, the
sides are prone to scratching, so you’ll need to take care of it.
Okay, on to what really matters. The sound quality of the
Shure KSM32/SL Condenser Mic is much more than what you'd expect from a midrange
solution, but it doesn’t quite match the quality of much higher priced
specialty microphones. While this mic is
a great all-around performer in very specific situations, it can’t give you the
performance that high-end microphones will.
I tested it while recording on a drum synth. The Shure KSM32/SL Condenser Mic was
fantastic at catching the true bass but it didn’t quite catch the brighter
tones as accurately as I would’ve liked.
Granted, this can usually be fixed in postproduction or through some
high-end boosting so it’s not really a problem; just an annoyance.
Recording vocal performances was also a mixed bag. The Shure KSM32/SL Condenser Mic elicits sharpness
in vocal recordings. Though this isn’t
unpleasant, this characteristic isn’t necessarily true to life, either. In my opinion, it’s really just a matter of
personal preference.
In any event, the Shure KSM32/SL Condenser Mic is a
fantastic piece of machinery for its midrange price. I highly recommend it as a low cost multi-tasker
in the recording studio.
