Audio-Technica (or just A-T) says they make high-performance microphones. In reality, they make a dynamic range of audio mics for the budgeted musician, half-steppers and those who want to graduate to a better system, but only know A-T because they sucked them in early. That’s not to say A-T doesn’t makes good performance-grade equipment, because they do…but most pros will attest A-T microphones are not considered “high-performance” in the company of Royer, Neumann or even Shure.
Established in Japan in the early 1960s, Audio-Technica started making microphones in the late 70’s. They broke into audio technologies for microphones as the respective technologies became available, and innovated as best they could.
Audio-Technica microphones are probably the best choice for low-budget studios that don’t want the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel. It’s a good gift for a young musician who wants to explore the possibilities of home recordings, or needs a few cheap stage mics. I don’t use A-T by preference. However, since their microphones are not the company’s strong point, don’t rule out their extensive line of other audio gear.
Audio-Technica microphones range between $50 and $1,100, the latter being a tube microphone. They are available at MusiciansFriend.com and Amazon.com.
