Ribbon Microphones

WHY Ribbon Microphones?

A Ribbon Microphone is a variety of dynamic microphone that utilizes a thin metal strip (or ribbon) that lives between the two poles of a magnet. Sound strikes the ribbon and causes it to move back and forth within the magnetic field resulting in a generated voltage. Ribbon Microphones are usually bidirectional and can be used for many things. Known for their sonic “realism,” they are becoming increasingly versatile and durable with innovation.  There is, however, one caveat concerning these microphones that is important to remember. They should not be subjected to Phantom Power from consoles or preamps. It can significantly damage the microphone.
